SEO WordPress Checklist

This checklist was originally created for personal convenience. It has been an assistant through many wordpress installation and completely updated and revisited recently because of the release of the 3.0 version. This checklist can help ease the road and is fully detailed setup blueprint that requires little compromise. The code, visitor experience and search optimization are in harmony. This checklist provides steps and configuration instructions to setup the wordpress core including advanced “recommended” plugins from which should be build upon. Result is fast tweaked for performance, useabilty and search engine ready wordpress blogging…and much more!

Let us first get the obvious out of the way…

WordPress 3.0

Installing wordpress will only briefly be addressed here because, it’s presumed you have some experience with wordpress and you already know how to do that. Otherwise watch Installing WordPress Video Tutorials below to get back on track as fast as possible.

Install WordPress using cPanel. Visit your hosting providers Cpanel to perform a one click installation.
Download WordPress at the official website to get the latest version. Then Manually Install WordPress
Download WordPress Multi User at the official website to get the latest version.

WPMU IS NOW MERGED WITH WP3+ To activate WP3 Multi Sites with sub-domains on shared hosting like Hostgator you need to create a wildcard sub-domain like *.YourDomain.com from your cPanel. Be patience, it can take a while before the sub-domain will be activated.

Install WordPress using cPanel

WordPress 3 MultiSite Setup

 Admin Security

Login and create a new admin user

USE ENCRYPTED 12+ CHARACTERS PASSWORD

Logout and instantly login again with the new user details you have just created.
Delete the old admin user.

RECOMMENDED WORDPRESS PLUGINS

SEO Automatic WP Core Tweaks (WP3.0 Ready)

Install and activate the SEO Core Tweaks plugin.
Run the plugin as explained in the SEO WP Core Tweaks Video if you don't know how.
Then just leave it active for the extra plugins (dd sitemap, post teaser, page order,..)

Save 20 minutes on every WordPress Setup

cbNet Ping Optimizer (WP2.9.2 Ready)

Install and activate the cbNet Ping Optimizer plugin.
Configure it to include the latest List Of Ping Services.
Enable pinging from the cbNet configuration page.
Enable to limit excessive pinging in short time.

Akismet (WP3.0 Ready)

Register for a wordpress Akismet API key.

ONE TIME ONLY

Install and activate the Akismet plugin.

INSTALL IF NOT INCLUDED

Enter the api key in the form on the akismet configuration page.
Enable to automatically discard spam comments on posts older than a month.

Save your settings.
